Definition: Tourist, Tourism, Travel, Visitors, and Exclusionist
Definition of Tourist:
In 1800 A.D. an oxford dictionary defines tourist as “tourist is a person who travels pleasure of travelling out of the curiosity and because he has nothing better to do.”
According to WTO “tourist is a temporary visitor staying at least 24 hour in a country visited when the purpose of the journey can be classified under one of the following heading:- i) leisure (recreation, holiday, health, study, religion, and sport). ii) Business, family, mission, meeting.”
Definition of Tourism:
To understand the tourism, the following definitions given by different authors and organizations can help.
- Australian economist Hermann van schullard gave the first definition in 1910 A.D. according to him “The sum total of operation mainly of economic nature, which directly related to entry, stay and movement of foreigners inside and outside a certain country, region, or city.” This definition ignores the domestic tourism and it considers only foreigners as tourist.
- Two Swiss professor Watler Hunziker and Kurt Kraft define tourism in 1942 A.D. according to him “Tourism is sum of phenomena and relationship arising from the travel and stay of nonresident, in so far as they do not lead to permanent resident and are not connected with any earning activities.
- In 1976 A.D. tourism society of England define tourism as “tourism is temporary short term movement of people to destination outside the places where they normally live and work and their activities during the stay at this destination. It includes movement for all purpose as well as day visit or excursion.
This definition has provides the meaning of tourism broadly i.e. movement of the people for all purpose. It means there is no boundary in terms of the purpose of visit to be tourist.
- In 1993 A.D. the world tourism organization (WTO) suggested official and technical definition to united nation (UN) for the statistical purpose as: – “tourism is an activity of a person traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business, or any other purpose.
Definition of Travel:
Travel refers to the act of moving from one location to another. This can refer to long-distance, short-distance, overseas, domestic, and various other forms. Crucially, travel also includes both round trips and one-way journeys, and it covers a wide variety of different travel purposes.
Travel is the movement of people between relatively distant geographical locations, and can involve travel by foot, bicycle, automobile, train, boat, airplane, or other means, with or without luggage, and can be one way or round trip. Travel can also include relatively short stays between successive movements.
The travel industry, therefore, refers to the numerous aspects of the wider service industry which cater to the needs and desires of those who have traveled from one part of the world to another.
Definition of Excursionist:
“A temporary visitor stays less than 24 hour in their countries visited although they may visit the country during one day or more and return to their ship or train to sleep.”
In 1991A.D. WTO defines excursionist as: – the term international excursionist (same day visitor) refers to an international visitor who does not spend the right in a collective or private accommodation in the country visited.”
Definition of Visitor:
Any person visiting a country other than that in which he has his usual places of residence, for any reason other than following an occupation remunerated from within the country visited.
In 1991 A.D. WTO define visitor as follows:- as a person who travels to country others than that in which he has usual residence but outside his usual environment for a period not exceeding 12 month and whose main purpose of visit is other than the exercising of an activity remunerated from within the place visited.
